Introduction

This page is designed to showcase my photography and design work.  For the past five years I have been living in Asia, three years in Thailand and two years in Korea, it has given me a wonderful opportunity to photograph some amazing things.

I’m a great believer in the phrase “The best camera is the one you have” and over the years I’ve used everything from DSLRs to homemade pinhole cameras. I think too much importance is placed on what you have, personally I think the person behind the camera is more important. I’ve seen people take creative photographs using plastic toy cameras and I’ve seen people take some incredibly dull photos with high end DSLR cameras. If you don;t have a good eye and a creative mind, then all the money in the world isn’t going to make you a great photographer.

I have a new camera so I’m taking a short break from the Hipstamatic comparisons. Here’s the first decent thing I’ve shot, it’s a simple trick. I shot in RAW so it was easy to edit in Photoshop’s Camera Raw.

Hipstamatic Comparisons: Part 8 Alfred Infrared

•27/04/2012 • Leave a Comment

I decided to add some variety and not do another still life.

The Alfred Infrared is a strong oversaturated film so when it’s used with lenses like the Lucifer VI the effect can sometimes be too much, of course there’s no such problems with the John S.

At the other end of the spectrum the Susie fails again however the Adler 9009 produces a decent print for the first time.

Hipstamatic Comparisons: Part 7 Claunch 72 Monochromatic Film

A wonderfully surreal print from my old friend the John S and a nice even image from the Tejas were the highlights of the Claunch 72 Monochromatic test. The Lucifer VI also produced another strong print.

Still no joy from the Susie with a horribly over exposed print, the Adler 9009 fared little better.

Special mentions again for the Watts and Chunky lenses.

Photo taken by n23art, a long time depression sufferer. He is from the UK, but had been living in Asia for the last five years. More about him here. Photographed in Prestatyn, Wales, UK.

About this photo: I was waiting for a train which has been delayed, so to pass the time I started photographing seagulls. I didn’t look at the photos until I was back in Korea and I didn’t think they were that interesting, so as an experiment I decided to put all of them together.

Hipstamatic Comparisons: Part 6 BlacKeys Supergrain Film

•19/04/2012 • Leave a Comment

I’m not overly impressed with this film, the prints seem flat and lifeless and the high contrast lenses don’t work too well with this film. I’m wondering if my choice of subject and the lighting were partly responsible for this

The Buckhorst and Bettie XL came out on top this time and even the Adler 9009 produced a decent print.

Predictably the Susie was a failure yet again. I’m sure there must be one film that works well with this lens. I just haven’t found it yet.

The other surprise was the John S and Lucifer not working well with this film.

Hipstamatic Comparisons: Part 5 BlacKeys B+W Film

Despite being a black and white there seems to be some muted colours in some of the prints. Continuing a predictable pattern the John S and Lucifer VI produce the best shots and the Susie and Adler 9009 produce the weakest. The Watts and Chunky also performed well and the randomness of the Salvador 84 is it’s usual “hit or miss” self.

Hipstamatic Comparisons: Part 4 Ina’s 1935 Film

This was interesting test because of the choice of subject. When combined with right The Ina’s 1935 produces rich colours. The John S and Lucifer VI lenses coming out on top again. Equally predictable was the failure of the Susie and Adler 9009, the Susie in particular creating another flat, bland, washed out print. I will persist with these lenses though, surely there is a film that work well with these.

Special mentions for the Melodie, Loftus and James M.
